About Sobaek Mountain National Park

Established in 1987, Sobaek Mountain National Park is located in the central region of the Korean Peninsula, spanning parts of Chungcheongbuk-do and North Gyeongsang provinces. This park covers the majestic Sobaek mountain range, which forms part of the greater Sobaek-sanmaek mountain system, known for its steep peaks, crystal-clear streams, and dense deciduous and coniferous forests. The park’s geography features high elevation zones including one of South Korea’s prominent peaks, Chiak Mountain (1,288 meters), which is famous for its panoramic vistas and challenging hiking routes. Ecologically, the park supports a diverse range of flora and fauna, including Korean pine trees, wild azaleas, and rare wildlife such as Asiatic black bears, Eurasian otters, and migratory birds. Historic and cultural attractions enhance the park’s appeal; notable are several ancient Buddhist temples including Buseoksa, which date back to the Silla dynasty and provide serene retreats across the mountainous terrain. Visitors can engage in activities like hiking, mountain climbing, bird watching, photography, and seasonal snow trekking. Key highlights include scenic overlooks, waterfalls, and well-maintained multi-day hiking trails that connect valleys and ridges, offering immersive natural experiences year-round. The park is accessible from nearby towns such as Danyang and Yeongju, making it a popular destination for both domestic and international visitors seeking nature and cultural heritage combined. With its unique blend of geography, biodiversity, and historical significance, Sobaek Mountain National Park remains a treasured asset for outdoor enthusiasts and conservationists alike.
